East Coast Australia

Howdy all!

We're back in Sydney now after a week and a half journey down from Brisbane. We stopped off in Surfers Paradise for a few days, then went to Byron Bay. Great places with some nice views. We're heading for LA tomorrow morning, and we'll have at least one more video surprise when we get there!

Hi from Auckland, New Zealand!

After a long journey we are finally in New Zealand.. the side trip to Japan was amazing!

We managed to see all the sites and cities we were planning on including: Osaka, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, Tokyo, Sendai and Kashamadai (spelling questionable). The specific locations are unknown to me, but our friend Danny will provide a list of the locations we visited in the future; its just to hard to remember all the names!

We arrived in Auckland last night after midnight local time and managed to check into the YHA Auckland International. The next few days will be spent relaxing.. I think my feet might fall off!

Its been a while since we've had a chance to upload videos. The internet speed problem is very annoying!

I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Sydney. We're flying to Japan tomorrow to meet up with my friend Danny for a tour of the country.

Anyways, the movies in this post include:

A car show in Melbourne

Last day in Adelaide

Hey everyone,

I don't have much time to write this so it will have to be brief.

The last while has mostly been spent in the outback australia. We went straight from Melbourne to Coober Pedy, then up to Alice Springs where we took a three day outback tour (Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon) then spent two days in the Alice. The last five days we have been in Adelaide. Tomorrow its off to Sydney, then Thursday Japan.

Coober Pedy is an opal mining town; very multicultural. Most people live underground either in old mines or dug outs. Even the churchs are underground. There is an 18 hole golf course (keep off the grass), lots of aboriginies and a great didjeridu shop. I got both my second didjeridu and first lesson at that shop.

The outback is hot, and full of flies. We were lucky on our tour in that most of the time it was raining; kept us cool. Too much detail to write, some pictures will follow.

Alice springs is a small town in the centre of the country, it is known as a place to runaway to. There are loads of aboriginies, and a few nice bars. Here I got my third didjeridu and second lesson. I promise.. no more didjeridu's! Ross's post will have a short video of me playing.. this was at the very beginning of my first lesson, already the sound is much different yet again. I will show everyone in June.

Adelaide is my favorite ciry in Australia so far.. it is full of great beer, friendly people and spacious malls. (har har) but seriously, its a great place and probably where I'd like to live if I ever came down here for a longer period of time. The beach area is amazing, streets are clean and the general attitude is very australian (unlike melbourne)

I can't wait to see Japan, but I'm alittle scared of the culture shock and carrying my bags all day, everyday but I guess its worth it. I'll try to write sooner next time.

Tasmania Part 3

Hello everybody.

We're currently in Adelaide and the internet is much better than in Melbourne. Part 3 of the Tasmania experience is now up, and you can see it below. We are in Adelaide for the day waiting for our connecting bus to go to Coober Pedy at 6pm. (Its 8:30 am right now).

We got some more pictures and videos while in Melbourne. Some nice views of the city at night with a festival going on. Those will be up sometime soon. Possibly next week when we get back to Adelaide from the outback. In addition to those clips and pics, we should have some interesting stuff from the outback, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, and Uluru!

As Andrew said, its been hard to get some internet access lately. The internet was pretty bad in Melbourne, and it didn't look too good when we got to Hobart, Tasmania. But today we stumbled upon a little campground that has free internet. And its not too bad! So here are some videos from the Pear/Apple orchard we were at in Shepparton around 2 weeks ago.

We have some entertainment on our day off first. Then we get down to work... in a thunderstorm! After that, we play around on the tractors. Enjoy!

Its been along time!

A lot has happened since the last post.. and even now I don't have any media to share! The internet has been very hard to find.. and a good connection even more so. I'll start from the top:

Shepparton was very hard work.. harvest work is a good work out but in 42-43 degree weather it just makes you feel sick! I was lucky to pick two bins a day (30 bucks a bin) There was a great crowd of people working with us, and we had good times when we weren't working just hanging around our lovely world war II barracks. I have loads of pictures, and ross videos, but I think they will have to wait until I get home to be properly displayed (possibly some videos coming later, depending on how much work ross puts into it). I'd say the best part of shepparton was driving the tractors, and playing with the diablo! (plastic spin toy you throw into the air and catch on a string)

After Shepparton (as planned) we went to Melbourne and were lucky enough to stay with a great family we met threw dad's contacts. Melbourne is a great city, we spent our week touring around with the locals seeing great food, shopping, cafes and bars. Highlights included an open air cinema show right downtown, an exhibition AFL (Australian Football League or footy) game at the Telstra dome, and hanging around with Marie and her sisters. Again, lots of pictures from Melbourne, but I won't be posting them until I get home.

Last Wednesday we landed in Hobart Tasmania, and since then we have been touring around extensively. We hired a car for 7 days, and have already seen a great deal south of hobart (national parks, air walk tree exhibition, hasting caves, bruny island, and lots of great scenery) and within the last two days moved north west of hobart. Today we climbed Mt Fields, saw three waterfalls (great pictures), and drove threw one of the saddest towns I've ever seen (Queenstown) where the primary work is limestone mining. Tonight we are staying in a great cabin lodge in a town called Straham; tomorrow first thing its off to Cradle Mountain. Still lots to see, but its back to Melbourne this coming Thursday, where we will probably spend the weekend at our friends beach house.

Our air tickets to Japan and New Zealand have also been booked since the last post with dates something like this: March 28th -> Japan, April 6th -> Australia en route to New Zealand (landing on the 8th), and May 2nd back to Australia so we can explore the famous east coast (sunshine and gold).

I don't have much more to say right now, I hope next time I'll have some pictures.. but I'd say the vast majority of the media will have to wait until I'm home. I hope everyone is having a great time at home!

Digeridoo playing!

Hey!!

Its the end of our stay in Canberra already.. but I don't think any more time would be required. The city is pretty small, about the population of Halifax; however, unlike Halifax there isn't much to do here and the shops and cafe's all close very early. Saturday was mostly spent with travel, sunday we rented a bike and toured around the main lake and war memorial. Monday we went to parliament and had the great luck to observe the house of representatives in session, during question period. This included most MP's, the prime minister, his cabinet, and the leader of the opposition. The questions were interesting, I enjoyed it. The parliament is massive, its hard to believe the size almost.

I have been looking for a digeridoo since I arrived in Australia, and most have been very obviously fake (incorrect wood, shape, non aboriginal design etc) but luckily at the parliament they were selling authentic pieces shipped in from the Darwin area. I purchased a great digeridoo, which I really enjoy. It has already been shipped back to Halifax, I only had a short chance to try playing (which is shown below).

Today (tuesday) we went to the museum, and met an aboriginal who lucky for me was a digeridoo teacher! I received some great tips unfortunately I won't be able to try them until June. His cousin was actually a famous player (David Hudson). I purchased one of his CDs, and used it in the video below as part of the joke.

Tomorrow we are off to Shepparton for some pear picking.. and then Melbourne! I don't expect we will have any updates for at least a week, probably from the Melbourne area.

Farm Life!

Howdy,

As Andrew said, quite a lot has happened in the past two weeks. Its hard to know where to start. Surf camp was fun, but I injured my leg after standing up on the board the second time. After returning to Sydney, I saw a doctor and was informed that I had injured a ligament in my knee. It took almost a week before my knee became almost normal (its still stiff and sore sometimes).

The farm work was very interesting. A video clip is included at the end of this post that shows some of the sights we saw at the farm. We fed some sheep, saw a dust devil, saw some parrots and other birds, a bit of lightning, and even some kangaroos. All in all, it was a very fun experience.

Now we are in Canberra exploring the city. We have seen the parliament house (even sat in on question period!), the war memorial, and today we went to the national museum.

Golspie farm life!

Hey everyone..!

Its been along time since I've had the chance to write.. it is February 5th at 9:20 PM (+10 GMT) as I am writing this, it won't be posted for some time to come.

To start with we found something to do after surf camp! (which we are currently doing now) We are working on a farm near Taralga, New South Wales with the Croaker family. I'll get back to that later..

First of all I need to cover surf camp (pictures to follow). Surfing is hard!! It is probably the most physically demanding thing I have ever done.. but I managed to stand on my board twice in the first day, and many times on the second! Unfortunately Ross injured his knee on the first day while dismounting the board, and we had to leave camp after two days rather than four. I have to say though, I was so tired I don't think I could have handled the remainder of the camp anyhow.. and the camp owners were nice enough to give us vouchers to come back to the camp for an additional two days anytime during our trip! I'm sure we will do that later, just before coming home (End of May). The Wednesday and Thursday to follow were used only to recover from surfing, we stayed in Sydney again. Tuesday night I could barely move.

That Friday we got the train from Sydney to Goulburn where we were picked up by Chris Croaker headed for work on his farm. We are going to be at the farm from Friday to the following Saturday (It is currently Monday night as I write this). It is a 2200 acre sheep farm. There are 6 or 7 work dogs, some chickens, a cat, shearing sheds, barns, and everything else you'd expect. Saturday we spent the day weeding their house garden and working the compost. Yesterday Ross was lucky and got to go feeding the sheep with Chris, while I worked on a fence near one of the shearing sheds, and today we all worked on a fence far out into the farm (electric fence at that: 65,000 volts!) Tomorrow we will be stacking animal feed, and patching up some cracks on a water collection system. In our spare time we clean old bricks for use in future projects. Today we both got the chance to drive Chris's manual truck.. with the drivers seat on the right side of course! It was interesting driving on the left, driving a truck, and driving manual.. three great experiences! I think I have finally figured out the manual transmissions once and for all.. Wednesday I will be feeding the sheep with Chris and Thursday and Friday are still up in the air.

After the farm we will travel to Canberra, which is in the Australian Capital Territory. Very exciting! They have some great museums, galleries, and a 1.1 billion dollar parliament which was only completed a few years ago! There will be lots of pictures from there for sure..

Fireworks!!!

Lots of stuff going on!!

As Andrew said, there's quite a bit of stuff going on in Sydney lately. We saw some more fireworks last night because of Australia day. We did plenty of walking and took a ferry to Manly beach. We got a cool video of the ferry ride, I'll try to put that up tomorrow. In the meantime, below is the fireworks show from Aussie day. It's in two parts, so just watch them in the order they appear.

Lots of Animals!

Howdy folks,

Its been a fun few days here. Lots to tell you about.

We went to a fireworks festival, they call it cracker festival here though. I was imagining going there and taste testing some crackers.. haha. Well, it was a very cool event. We were situated in the middle of a circular arena surrounded by fireworks. Many loud explosions and colorful fountains. They confiscated my video camera, so no clips :( but Andrew got some great pictures of the fireworks.

We have been walking around the city a lot lately. There is a great botanical garden. Many different types of plants and animals there. Andrew's got some good pictures of that too.

A few days ago, we went to the Sydney aquarium. Very cool stuff there. We got to see some crocs, sharks and many other cool looking animals. They didn't take my camera for this one, so there's a clip of some of the cool stuff we saw at the end of this blog.

Australia Day 2007!

Hello everyone,

this week at 'Wake Up' has been great.. almost never stopping at all! Some highlights include the Sydney Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, Ferry to Manly Beach and the beach itself, Australia Day and their fireworks and a great 'cracker festival' at the Sydney Olympic site. Its almost too much to write about.. we are off to surf camp in only one more day but we don't have anything firmed up for after that yet. Stay tuned for that!

The aquarium had lots of wildlife, but the shark tank was the most impressive. The botanical gardens had a great view of the opera house, lots of amazing trees I've never seen before and great birds! I can't say exactly what kind, but I think there were some parrots. (Picture to follow) Manly beach is amazing, I think the best I've seen yet and much better than LA (at least in LA's winter). The town of Manly was also very interesting, a nice little surfer town. The ferry over allowed us some great views of the harbour and because we went on Australia day there was a jet flying over head very close to the ship. Lots of boat parties as well. Earlier in the week we lucked out and got to enjoy a free 'crackers festival' at the Olympic park. The cracker festival was basically a fireworks show only more. Everyone stood in the middle of a massive circle and the crackers were fired from around us, there was also music and actors as part of the show it was very intense and impressive.

The rest of our time was dedicated to walking the streets, seeing sights, sleeping and making new friends! We have only been here one week so far, but we have already made many great friends; the experience down here is hard to describe accurately. I am going to post a good number of photos now.. including a view into the 'wake up' hostel. I'll see you all very soon!

Wake Up!

Hey everyone,

I don't have any new pictures ready for today so this is just going to be a small update..

We have changed hostel's (footprints -> 'wake up!') and the new hostel is amazing.. I'll have pictures soon to show you what I mean. Great bar in the basement, cafe on the main level, and a clean kitchen on the 1st. It feels more like a hotel than a hostel really. We are going to stay here at wake up for the next week (monday to monday) and then go to a four day surfing camp! This week I'll be checking out the aquarium, zoo, australia day (friday) festivals and going to a barbie (bbq) on cogee beach! So there is lots going on..

After the surfing camp we plan to find 'working hostels' in smaller towns away from sydney. Working hostels are interesting; basically you live and work with a great group of people. The farm or other organization owns or is involved with the hostel, and everyone who stays there gets to work and live, you even get free transportation to the job because everyone is going to the same place! I'm looking forward to seeing more of the country. Another option we are going to look into is something called 'WWOOF' which is volunteering on organic farms across australia.. this work will give us board and food in exchange for 4-5 hours of work a day. It will also allow us to meet locals and see parts of Australia we probably wouldn't have otherwize.

So in short, we know what we are doing for the next two weeks but after that its going to get even more interesting! We've basically been run of the mill tourists so far, but it really has been fun.

Oz Info!

Austrailia is very hot!! Wow. Going from -20's degrees Celcius a week ago to the high 20's is pretty intense!

Sydney is very large. Andrew and I took a long walk around downtown yesterday. We got some pictures of some cool areas (see Andrew's post) and I took a few clips of some interesting areas. The clip below shows one of the intersections in the city. After the cars have their turn at the intersection, its everyone for themselves at the crosswalk, have a look!

We're planning on walking around the city some more today. We need big hats and sandals to survive here. HAHA!

Oh, the money here is so crazy looking! We'll have some pictures of those soon.

Future posts will be a little less often until we work out a better internet option.

Hello Mates!

The flight from LA to Sydney was enjoyable, I know its hard to believe! We had fairly good food, all you could drink, and on demand entertainment. Not to mention great company! The 13 hours went by faster than I ever would have imagined.

After landing in Sydney, we hooked up with a shuttle service and were quickly at our hostel. The first thing that stood out to me were the cars (of which most are not available in north america) and the way everyone drives. Not only is it on the opposite side of the road, but its fast and aggressive! Horns are heard almost all the time.

Most of the day was spent walking the streets of Sydney (mostly Pitt St. [where the hostel was] and george street). Its warm here.. I mean really warm! The sun is more intense than I have ever felt before, I don't think I would walk outside without sunscreen ever. There is a great deal of tourist type stuff to see and do.. we plan to see the aquarium, gardens, olympic park, art gallery and more. Even the streets are interesting.. most all malls have no doors.. none at all! You can walk right in, and feel the breeze outside. I don't mean that its just wide open but could be closed either; its open for good, major building are designed to be wide open moving sometimes from one street to another inside a building. (pictures to come).

There is a monorail! It feels like you are in disneyland almost, the whole city has a theme pack feel.. another interesting thing we noticed was a particular intersection where the pedestrians have full right of way in every direction.. and when that happens the street is full of people going every which way! (see Ross's post for a video)

I suppose I have lots more to say, but I can't think of it now. Here are some pictures from our first day down under.

Hollywood Footage

Ahoy!

As Andrew has explained, the internet availability here is pretty slim, and as such, our postings have been a little scarce. This should make up for it though.

We had a lot of fun while in LA. Irving and Sherry (my uncle and aunt) were very helpful and fun! Lots of sights to see, and places to travel to. We got a lot of pictures and video clips of different areas of the city, including some beautiful beaches. We also sampled some of the wonderful LA driving on the interstate freeways (more like parking lots, hahaha). One particularly cool area to see was the Hollywood hills by the Hollywood sign. Below is a clip of our adventure through the crazy narrow winding roads of the hills. We attempted to get as close as possible to the sign. Apparently there is a fine if anyone attempts to get to the sign because of the vandalism in the past. Well, have a look at the wicked houses and crazy scenery in the video.

LA Day 2 (From Australia!)

Hello from Australia!!

We haven't had an opportunity to access the internet since we left LA so today we will make up for it with a few posts..

The second day in Los Angeles was just as jam packed as the first. We left Fullerton early in the morning heading straight for Santa Monica Beach Pier. The beach itself is beautiful, and the pier a famous tourist trap but I would say it is a lessor beach when compared to New Port and Balboa. We then following Santa Monica Blvd. from the beach all the way to east Hollywood (passing Santa Monica City, Century City and a few others for which I forget the name). This part of LA while nicer than what we saw Tuesday, was still slummier than I had expected. The night before we had worked out the directions to the famous Hollywood sign and we tried to follow them at that point. (see ross's post for a video of the drive in Beverly Hills) The drive up is full of small tight roads and great views. After descending the hills we drove along Hollywood Blvd. just enough to see the star covered sidewalks and red carpet movie theatres. (no pictures) Finally we set out on Sunset Blvd. for a drive through the richest part of LA, Beverly Hills (including Holmby Hills, and Bel Air). The hedges protecting some houses were easily 50 feet tall, and it was very common to have a security gate with intercom. We stopped by the Playboy mansion, but all we got to see was the big black gate.

What a day! We then jumped on the 405 freeway and headed back to Fullerton for a chinese buffet with Ross's family before heading to LAX.

New Port, Long Beach and more..

Our first real day in LA! (and last for awhile)

After a great Mexican breakfast and a slow morning around Fullerton (which is in Orange County I found out!) we rented a car and hit the road. We spent the whole day driving and managed to hit the following areas in this order: Fullerton, Anaheim, Santa Ana, New Port (including all the cities and villages along the south beach front), Balboa, Long Beach (including the docks), Torrence, and many other cities along the Pacific Coast highway all the way back up to LAX. We passed by Santa Monica, and then took the freeway all the way back to Fullerton. We plan to spend what time we have tomorrow exploring downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Beverley Hills.

This is the pool located in the center of the apartment complex; Ross's Aunt and Uncle are the managers of the area. It is in the city of Fullerton, Orange County. Fullerton is very clean and cute, Disneyland is only a 5 minute drive away!

This is a native plant right outside the front door. It may not be super special, but it looks amazing in real life!

Troubles on the way to LA

Our first day of travel was not without glitches. If all had gone according to plan we would have arrived in LA around noon pacific time; the reality was about 11:30 PM pacific time. We ran into a strange problem not once, but twice!

After passing security and arriving at the gate in Halifax, we found out that one of the crew members was missing (and because it was snowing outside I believe it was weather related) The lack of a steward caused the departure from halifax to be delayed about one hour.. just long enough to make sure our connection in Montreal to LA would not happen. Once in Montreal, and with a rescheduled ticket (to depart at 6 EST) we thought all was well.. but alas once again a single steward was missing! How could this happen twice in one day!!!

The bottom line is I am now in LA and its great!

I can't believe we are leaving already! WOOO HOO!!! Getting up at 4:30 this morning doesn't seem so bad when you know you'll be across the continent this time tomorrow. I expect to see something a little bit like this just a few hours from now..
